What is a Pupusa?

Pupusas are a popular Salvadorian snack food -- common there as hotdogs are here. Traditionally they’re filled with a blend of quesillo (a kind of soft cheese), chicarron (minced, cooked pork), and refried beans.

At Los Comales, we use mozzarella cheese and a choice of filling including zucchini, refried beans, pork or chicken.

Pupusas are typically served with curtido – a cabbage slaw with red chilies and vinegar, and salsa and that’s how we serve them here. Please note that the curido is a little spicy so if you are extremely sensitive to heat you might want to give it a pass. Our salsa is home-made and goes excellent with any kind of pupusa, and if you need more heat just ask for our home-made hot sauce!
